Apr.10.2008 INDONESIA SURF TRIP FOR STUDENTS

Here's an e-mail we received, if anyone is interested, feel free to contact them...

Basics:

A non-profit organization has just set up a boat-surf trip to the Mentawais, Indonesia for college students.  During this boat trip, English and journalism courses will be taught onboard.  Also, a few stops will be made at remote islands to distribute aid supplies to earthquake and Tsunami stricken Indo’s.  I seriously pooped my pants when Matt first told me about this trip.  Here it is:

-       2 weeks surfing around the Mentawais islands with 9 other students

-       3 college transferable English/journalism units, taught by Surfer Magazine’s Matt George

-       Humanitarian aid opportunities

price: $4 K

            Background:

Ex-professional surfer and former Chief Editor of Surfer Magazine Matt George has spent the last few years trying to organize a surf trip, designed for students, that included epic surfing as well as a college education.  As a current high school teacher and ex-magazine writer, education has always been important to him; he also has done much international humanitarian work.  His non-profit company, “Last Mile Operations’, was created last year and is running its first trip to Indonesia this summer.  Matt contacted a few surfers here at Cal Poly University to help him spread the word about this trip to other college students…that’s why I’m writing to you.

              The Trip:

We will fly into Bali this summer and get onboard the Km D’bora, an 80 foot timber motor-sailor vessel.  For the next to weeks, we’ll cruise around the Mentawais islands finding barrels galore, as well as “going to class”.  Half the day will be in the barrel, and the other half will be taking courses on writing, journalism, and photography from Matt George and a few other instructors.   Also, the boat will store some emergency supplies like water and medicine that we will bring to remote, struggling villages around the islands.  The last Tsunami you heard about was in 2005, but there have been numerous smaller one’s since, so there is a big need there.

              What Now?

I’m writing emails like this to surf contacts all over California and the east coast to find anybody who’s interested.  It’s a lot of money, but it is worth 3 units and you’re on a boat with Matt, a kingpin in the surf industry.

Please let me know if this sounds interesting, and even if not, your website says you are a officer in University of Central Florida’s surf club, so I would very much appreciate you mentioning this trip to anybody whom you think would be down…maybe forward this email?

So, please get back to me as soon as possible if you could by email or, even better, call me at 949-632-2016.

This really looks like the opportunity of a lifetime, and I’d love to talk to you about it more…Matt also wants the phone numbers of anyone who’s interested also

Later, hope this NE swells give you some fun,
